Intragastric Balloon (IGB) is a reversible and incision-free weight loss procedure. This procedure is going popular day by day. A deflated gastric balloon is inserted endoscopically into the stomach through the mouth and throat. The balloon is filled with saline solution. Due to this saline solution balloon is inflated and help in less intake and early Satiety. This balloon is made up of silicon and this balloon will lead to patients getting full quicker during meal times and as such reduced portion sizes achieved per meal. Intragastric balloon is a quite easy and incision-free procedure. This procedure takes only half an hour to take place. An obese person can reduce 10 to 15 kg weight within a year after undergoes this surgery.

There are different kinds of balloons like Orbera and the Spatz balloon. Some balloons are adjustable and some are non-adjustable after weight loss. This depends on cost of the balloon. Some balloon kept inside the stomach only for 6 months and some take 1 year depending on your BMI and doctors prescription.

Criteria for undergoing intragastric ballooning

After the careful evaluation of the complete medical history of the patient, the surgeon will decide whether intragastric balloon surgery is recommended or not to the patient. However, the general criteria to undergo gastric balloon surgery are as follows.

  • The patient has completed puberty i.e. The female patient should be above 15 years and the male patient should be above 17 years.
  • The BMI of the patient is between 30-40.
  • The patient has no previous surgery related to the stomach or the oesophagus
